Search Tips

  • What is a search engine? It is a program you enter search term(s) in (such as Weather and Adelaide) and click search. The programs will then display a number of relevant results (usually around 10).

  • Why are there so many search engines? They each work in different ways, for example, through people or programs categorising sites.

  • How can I be sure I have everything relating to a topic on the internet? You can't. In order to increase thoroughness it is advisable to search similar terms and try a few different engines. Multiple search engines (or meta engines) are designed to return results from several engines at once.

  • For better search techniques see boolean terms

  • For more search engines, see All-in-One

  • For more search engine tips see The Spider's Apprentice from Monash Uni .

  • If you really want to be comprehensive, try the Spire Project - a serious research resource .

  Boolean Terms
Many search engines support boolean terms for better searching.

Boolean terms are phases such as:
- bob and screamer = finds both
- bob or screamer = finds either
- bob not screamer = finds one term without the other
- bob near screamer = finds the terms close together.
