Free software is called freeware.
Shareware is software that has conditions of use (usually a trial time
limit and a payment if you wish to continue using it).
Why use freeware
or shareware?
If you just want to convert a few family photos
to email them (make them .jpg) or want to try out a new game, or
try your hand at creating a web page, or create a logo, or
browse the net with the latest browser, then this may be for
you.
Note that freeware and
shareware usually has no support, and there is a risk of
downloading viruses. So it is prudent to have good antivirus
software and download from reputable sites such as this.

(so it should be fast). Tucows only accepts reasonable to high

What is .pdf?
PDF stands for
portable document format. Word processing formats such as word
and wordperfect print differently on different printers. PDF
prints virtually identically on every printer because it "preserves
all of the fonts, formatting, colors, and graphics of any source
document".
Why do I need it?
A lot of government
sites and other large organisations use it, if you want to view
these sorts of documents then it is likely you will need it.
Many modern software packages include it already, so you may
already have it. To easily check, click here for the Federal Court Form Index, click on one of the letters and try
and open a form, if you can see the form you have a working pdf
reader.

It's fairly reliable, simple and free.
